The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, signed into law on August 16, represents a significant accelerant to the electrification of transportation. The act includes many key measures, including tax credits for the purchase of electric vehicles and installation of EV charging equipment. Administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program will provide funding to states to build electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in an effort to establish an interconnected network to facilitate data collection, access, and reliability.
According to the DOT, funding is available for up to 80% of eligible project costs, including:
The acquisition, installation, and network connection of EV charging stations to facilitate data collection, access, and reliability
Proper operation and maintenance of EV charging stations; and,
Long-term EV charging station data sharing
Participation in the NEVI program has a few caveats. For example, “EV charging stations must be non-proprietary, allow for open-access payment methods, be publicly available or available to authorized commercial motor vehicle operators from more than one company, and be located along designated FHWA Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs).” Other requirements include:
24/7 public access to chargers
Within one mile from a corridor (designated highway)
At least four (4) parking spaces served by 150kW Direct Current (DC) Fast Chargers with Combined Charging System (CCS) ports capable of simultaneously DC charging four EVs; a minimum station power capability at or above 600kW
Walkable amenities with public access (bathrooms, food vendors or vending machines, etc.
